1st John 2: 7
Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.

What Is The Old Commandment?

The old commandment is that we should love one another.

1st John 3: 11
For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

A New Commandment

1st John 2: 8
Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in Him (Jesus) and in you: because the darkness is past and the true light now shineth.

What is the New Commandment?

St. John 13: 34 (Jesus is speaking)
A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

Jesus loved us so much that He gave all He had for us; He gave His very best when He sacrificed His life for our salvation.  We are to love each other in the same way, by giving each other the best of who we are.

The Trademark of Jesus

St. John 13: 35 (Jesus is speaking)
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples if ye have love one to another

The trademark of Jesus is His love for us. Our trademark as disciples of Jesus is our love for one another. This love distinguishes us as disciples of Christ. If this love is not evident in us we are not disciples of Christ.

1st John 4: 8
He that loveth not knoweth not God for God is love.

Observation

Love must be expressed in action in order for it to have life. God loved us and He acted upon that love by sending His Son to die, so that we could live.

St. John 3: 16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Is your love for your fellow Christians and for mankind in general just a thought, or do you give it life by expressing it through deeds of kindness?
